457 SPONSORSHIP

“Standard Business Sponsors” can sponsor overseas employees to work in Australia for them. Obtaining the sponsorship agreement from Department of Immigration and Citizenship requires fulfilling a minimum set of requirements that most business shouldn’t have problem fulfilling. A registered “Standard Business Sponsors” is provided with an ABN numbers. There is no minimum turnover capital or profitability required but you must be a trading company.
However, the sponsored worker under 457 visa must work for the sponsoring company. The visa is invalid if the worker is working for a company other than the one sponsoring him.
Special Status—Startups
If you’re invited by a startup for employment, it can only grant you a 12 months sponsorship. After that, you need to reapply.
Training Requirement
An employer needs to spend 1% of its payroll on training in order to be approved as a 457 Sponsor. The training can be through an external course, or in-company trainers.
Recent Changes
With effect from July 2013, 457 Fees is to be borne by the employer and not in any case from the applicant.
